December 9th is the second Sunday of Advent 2012. Advent (which means “coming” or “arrival”) is a season where the church remembers Christ’s first coming and anticipates his promised return and is characterized by prayer, quiet waiting and joyful expectation.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel – LM 88 88 (Veni Emmanuel), Words: Latin (12th century), Tune: “Processionale” (15th century), Adaptation: Thomas Helmore (1854), Adapted from an arrangement by The Sing Team

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

The service began with a reading from Isaiah 59:9 and Isaiah 15b-17, 20 and by lighting the second candle of Advent.

For in a world of darkness…

…Justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us; we hope for light, and behold, darkness, and for brightness, but we walk in gloom. The Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice. He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no one to intercede; then his own arm brought him salvation, and his righteousness upheld him. He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head;?he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped himself in zeal as a cloak.

And a Redeemer will come to Zion…

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed – Words: James Montgomery (1821), Music: Vito Aiuto (2008)

This hymn (with a lilting new melody by pastor/musician Vito Aiuto of The Welcome Wagon) lyrically anticipates the return of Christ, the anointed Savior of world and the justice and peace He will usher in with his Kingdom.

Hail to the Lord’s anointed, great David’s greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed, His reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free;
To take away transgression and rule in equity.

Angels We Have Heard On High
– Words: Traditional French carol, “Les Anges dans nos Campagnes”, Music: Gloria (Barnes), Arrangement by Chris Tomlin

In this favorite hymn we join with the angels, giving glory to God as we remember the birth of Christ.

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
and the mountains in reply
echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Joy to the World (Unspeakable Joy) – Words: Isaac Watts (1719) (based on Psalm 98), Music: ANTIOCH C.M.rep. George Frederick Handel (1742), Arr. Lowell Mason (1836), Arr. and Additional Chorus by Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash and Matt Gilder.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

David led us into a time of confession by reading Romans 3:22a, 23.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

…Righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

The Church Has Waited Long – Words: Horatius Bonar (1845), Music: Scott Johnson

The whole creation groans,
and waits to hear that voice
that shall her comeliness restore,
and make her wastes rejoice.
Come, Lord, and wipe away
the curse, the sin, the stain,
and make this blighted world of ours
Thine own fair world again.

Awakening by Chris Tomlin and Reuben Morgan

For You and You alone awake my soul;
Awake my soul and sing.
For the world You love Your will be done;
Let Your will be done in me.

Like the rising sun that shines,
awake my soul awake my soul and sing.
From the darkness comes a light,
awake my soul awake my soul and sing.
