Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday services. This week’s service was planned and led by Andrew Luley. Our good friend, Scott Myers, provided photos to offer a glimpse into Sunday morning life at The Crossing. You’ll also find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs when available.

Our service began with a Call to Worship from “The Worship Sourcebook.”

In Christ, the God of heaven has made his home on earth.
Christ dwells among us and is one with us.
Highest of all creation, he lives among the least.
He journeys with the rejected and welcomes the weary.

Awakening by Chris Tomlin and Reuben Morgan

In Your presence, in Your power, awakening.
For this moment, for this hour, awakening.

For You and You alone awake my soul;
Awake my soul and sing.
For the world You love Your will be done;
Let Your will be done in me.

Hosanna
by Brooke Fraser

I see the King of Glory
coming on the clouds with fire,
the whole earth shakes,
The whole earth shakes.
Hosanna! Hosanna!
Hosanna in the highest!

Andrew read Titus 3:4-7 to remind us of God’s grace in Christ and to invite us into a time of prayer and confession.

“He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness,but according to His mercy,
by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior”

Rock of Ages – Words: Augustus M. Toplady (1776), Contemporary chorus by Page CXVI (2009). Arrangement by Page CXVI and David Wilton

Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling.
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless look to Thee for grace.
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior or I die.

Kristen read John 6:35 and 40 as an assurance of forgiveness.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me will not hunger,
and he who believes in me will never thirst. For this is the will of My Father,
that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life,
and I Myself will raise them up on the last day.”

Trees Will Clap by Andrew Camp, Scott Johnson, Patrick Miller and Greg Wiele

This new song (based on Isaiah 55) gives us an opportunity to sing and remember God’s invitation to enjoy the banquet of the gospel of Christ. The last line of the chorus was inspired by C.S. Lewis’ vision of Heaven as described in “The Last Battle,” the final book of “The Chronicles of Narnia”.

“I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now…Come further up, come further in!”

Turn your ear, hear his voice,
“Sinners come, and rejoice,
Through my son, I set you free.
Pardon won, upon my tree.

Trees will clap, clap their hands,
mountains sing, oceans hymn.
Take your joy, fill the earth.
Lead us up and further in.

Take My Life – Words: Frances R. Havergal (1874), Music and additional lyrics: Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio, Arrangement: The Crossing Music

Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
swift and beautiful for Thee.
