Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. You’ll find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs when available. This week’s liturgy review features photos by Nate Herndon.

This week we introduced a new song, written by Josh White as recorded by Liz Vice on her album “There’s A Light“. You can learn more about Liz’s story in this terrific NPR interview. Be sure to check it out.

1. Call to Worship: Psalm 103:8-13

Leader: The Lord is compassionate and gracious,

All: slow to anger, abounding in love.

Leader: He will not always accuse,

All: nor will he harbor his anger forever;

Leader: he does not treat us as our sins deserve

All: nor repay us according to our iniquities.

Leader: For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

All: so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

Leader: as far as the east is from the west,

All: so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Leader: As a father has compassion on his children,

All: so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.

Leader: Bless the Lord, O my soul,

All: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2. 10,000 Reason (Bless the Lord) by Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul;
worship His holy name.
Sing like never before, O my soul;
I’ll worship Your holy name.

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger.
Your name is great and Your heart is kind.
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing;
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

3. Holy, Holy, Holy – Words by Reginald Heber (1783-1826), Music: Nicaea, John B. Dykes

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Sunday worship, 10/18/2015

4. Almighty God by Leslie Jordan, David Leonard, and Sandra McCracken

Almighty God to you all hearts are open.
Search and know our thoughts and anxious fears.
Wash us in the fountain of your mercy.
Come with your light, we cannot hide from you.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Sunday worship, 10/18/2015

5. Call to Confession: Psalm 46:10-11

Leader: “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

All: The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

6. Be Still: Prayer of Confession (adapted from Prone to Wander: Prayers of Confession and Celebration by Barbara Duguid and Wayne Duguid Houk)

Leader: Father of mercies,

Quiet our anxious thoughts and help us to be still before you.

All: We confess that we do not run to you as our refuge and strength, but turn to many other sources of hope and help when our souls are troubled.

Leader: When our lives fall apart and our hearts are restless:

All: We are prone to fear you, accuse you, hate you, and feel abandoned by you.

Leader: If we have been obedient to you:

All: We think that you owe us better than this cup of suffering.

Leader: When we have disobeyed:

All: We fear that you are judging us and imagine that we have spoiled your wonderful plan for our lives.

Leader: Father, thank you for your presence with us in our joy and our sorrow, in our strength and our weakness.

All: We praise you that we cannot ruin your plans, for you work all things, even our own sin and the sins of others against us, together for our good and for your glory.

7. Great is Thy Faithfulness, Part 1– Words: Thomas O. Chisholm, Music: William M. Runyan
Based on an arrangement by Sandra McCracken

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
as thou hast been thou forever will be.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided;
great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Sunday worship, 10/18/2015

8. Be Still: Prayer of Assurance (adapted from Prone to Wander: Prayers of Confession and Celebration by Barbara Duguid and Wayne Duguid Houk)

Leader: Lord Jesus, You obeyed your Father with every thought and action,

All: Yet his wonderful plan for your life was to give you the bitter cup of suffering that should have been ours.

Leader: You trusted and loved God even when he didn’t let that cup pass from you; your faith never wavered when he turned his back on you, so that he would never have to forsake us.

All: Thank you for obeying in our place and giving us your righteousness.

9. Great is Thy Faithfulness, Part 2– Words: Thomas O. Chisholm, Music: William M. Runyan
Based on an arrangement by Sandra McCracken

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Sunday worship, 10/18/2015

10. Be Still: Prayer of Supplication (adapted from Prone to Wander: Prayers of Confession and Celebration by Barbara Duguid and Wayne Duguid Houk)

Leader: Holy Spirit,

Exalt Christ in our hearts.

All: Give us strength to trust in him, for we are weak and it is hard to practice what we believe.

Leader: When we fall, remind us of the oceans of love and forgiveness that are ours in Christ, and of your complete sovereignty over all sin.

All: May we treasure Christ in our weakness and failure, celebrating the love of such a wonderful Savior.

Leader: Thank you for times of pain when you dismantle our idolatries and disarm the fortresses that we turn to instead of you.

All: When life is stormy, let us find safety, peace, and hope in Christ, our best refuge and only source of true and lasting strength.

Leader: In his priceless name we pray,

All: Amen.

11. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing – Words: Robert Robinson (1758); Music: John Wyeth (1839), Arrangement: Kings Kaleidoscope

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Sunday worship, 10/18/2015

12 New Song: Empty Me Out by Josh White, Arrangement by Liz Vice

Empty me out. Fill me with You.
Lord there is nothing I can give to You.
I lay down my life here at Your feet.
You give me life so completely.

I died with You, was buried with You
The moment I believed.
I rose with You, ascended with You
into the Heavenlies.

Sunday worship, 10/18/2015
