Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday liturgy. This week, our friend, Scott Myers, provided photos to offer a glimpse into Sunday morning life at The Crossing. You’ll also find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs when available.

1. Call to Worship: Psalm 96:1-6 (adapted from a reading by Sojourn Community Church)

Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

2. Here I Am to Worship by Tim Hughes

King of all days, oh, so highly exalted,
glorious in heaven above,
humbly You came to the earth You created.
All for love’s sake became poor.

Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down,
here I am to say that You’re my God.
You’re altogether lovely, altogether worthy,
altogether wonderful to me.

3. Song of Confession: With Melting Heart and Weeping Eyes – Words: John Fawcett (1740-1817), Music: Clint Wells

With melting heart and weeping eyes,
My guilty soul for mercy cries;
What shall I do, or whither flee,
To rid the vengeance due of me?
To rid the vengeance due of me?

Does not Thy sacred word proclaim,
salvation free in Jesus’ name?
To Him I look and humbly cry,
“Lord, save a wretch condemned to die.
Lord, save this wretch condemned to die.”

4. Assurance of Forgiveness: Based on Colossians 2:13-14.

You were dead because of your sins
and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away.

Then God made you alive with Christ. He forgave all our sins.
He canceled the record of the charges against us
and took it away by nailing it to the cross.

Although our sins overwhelm us,
the grace and mercy of God far surpasses them.

In Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven,
the power of evil is broken,
and God restores us to righteousness and life!

Thanks be to God. Amen.

5. O My Soul, AriseWords: Charles Wesley (1742), Music and additional words: Eric McAllister

My God is reconciled
His pard’ning voice I hear
He owns me as His child
I can no longer fear
With confidence I now draw nigh
With confidence I now draw nigh
And “Father, Abba, Father,” cry

O my soul, arise
Behold the risen Christ
Your Great High Priest
Your spotless sacrifice O my soul, arise
God owns you as His child
Shake off your guilty fears
My soul, arise

6. Communion Song: All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name – Words by Edward Perronet (1780), Music: Coronation, Oliver Holden (1783), Chorus by Judah Groveman (based on a arrangement by Jaron and Katherine Kamon)

All hail the power of Jesus’ Name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown Him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown Him Lord of all.

His name is Jesus:
Risen Lamb for sinners slain.
His name is Jesus:
and all creation sings the praise
of Jesus name.

7. Communion Song: My Jesus, I Love Thee – Words: William R. Featherston, (1864), Music: Adoniram J. Gordon (1876), Based on an arrangement by Page CXVI

William Featherston was 16 years old when he penned the lyrics to this enduring hymn.

I love Thee because Thou has first loved me,
And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree.
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

I’ll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death,
And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath;
And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow,
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
