City of Refuge: Book Drive for Preschool Classroom

City of Refuge Book Drive

Nov. 4–18, The Crossing Office

City of Refuge, a local partner of The Crossing, is collecting items for their new preschool class for refugee and immigrant children. They are looking for donations of new or gently used preschool or kindergarten books, large beads, plastic bead cord, cookie sheets, puppets, or simple workbooks. There will be a collection box, and informational flyers in The Crossing office. Donations can be dropped off Nov. 4–18 during regular Crossing hours. For more information, please contact Abby Summers.

About City of Refuge:

Who we are

City of Refuge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to help and serve refugees and immigrants in Mid-Missouri. Our vision is to help refugees and immigrants become productive, successful, contributing members of our community.

Mid-Missouri has more than 8,000 refugees and immigrants. Each year an average of 200 new refugees come to Columbia, MO. Many of them do not speak English and arrive with only a few pieces of clothing and little money.

The Need

In 2018 alone, an unprecedented 68.5 million people around the world have been forced from their homes. Among them, nearly 25.4 million are refugees, well over half of whom are under the age of 18.

Over the past few years, thousands of women, children, and men from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have fled conflict and disaster, seeking a place to survive and recover in our community.

As persecution increases and people become more divided, there is an urgency for our city to join together and stand for those in need, now more than ever. Today we have an opportunity to comfort those searching for relief and to help them overcome the disaster that has shattered their lives and livelihoods.

Donate

There are several ways you can support the mission of City of Refuge. The bulk of our organization thrives because of modest, regular gifts. We are able to grow our program and develop new ways to help refugees through generous one-time gifts. There are also practical daily needs that you can meet with items you can donate. City of Refuge is a501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all gifts are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
